At Orangeville Vision Development Centre, we provide specialized eye examinations for individuals looking to obtain or renew their driving licenses in Ontario. Our team of expert optometrists is equipped to ensure you meet the Ministry of Transportation’s (MTO) vision standards.
Vision Standards for Ontario Driver’s Licenses
Driving in Ontario requires adherence to specific vision standards. Our eye exams for driving licenses focus on two main criteria:
- Visual Acuity: We measure your visual sharpness to ensure it is no poorer than 20/50, using the Snellen Rating system.
- Visual Field: We assess your peripheral vision to confirm a minimum horizontal visual field of 120 continuous degrees along the horizontal meridian and at least 15 continuous degrees above and below fixation.
Our Examination Process
Our examination process is thorough and tailored to the requirements of the Ontario Ministry of Transportation:
- Initial Screening: Both eyes are tested together, with or without the aid of glasses or contact lenses.
- Detailed Assessment: For those with vision in only one eye, we conduct a focused screening using your functioning eye.
- Equipment and Technology: We utilize state-of-the-art visual field machines and other advanced technology to accurately evaluate your eyes and complete necessary MTO forms.
Special Considerations for Various License Types
The vision requirements for specialty licenses (such as A, B, C, D, E, or F) are more stringent. These licenses generally require:
- Higher Visual Acuity: At least 20/30 in the better eye and 20/100 in the worse eye.
- Wider Visual Field: A visual field of 150 continuous degrees along the horizontal meridian and 20 continuous degrees above and below fixation.
Regular medical checks are also mandated for holders of these specialty licenses.
